The West Africa Regional PrEP Learning Network, hosted by CHOICE, provides national and sub-national ministries, implementing partners, community-based organizations, and others working with PrEP across West Africa with the tools and resources, best practices and opportunities to learn from others to help advance PrEP rollout and scale-up.

The goal of the Learning Network is to specifically engage the countries of Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Ghana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Togo, Liberia, Angola, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and Senegal to share experiences and cover topics that help meet their current PrEP planning and programming needs. This monthly webinar series features presentations from experts in specific content areas, lessons learned and insights shared from implementing partners and government ministries, and new tools or research on specific topics related to PrEP scale-up, ranging from demand creation to continuation.

  • HIV Prevention Ambassadors and PrEP Champions

    We explored how to engage HIV prevention ambassadors and PrEP champions to support access to and uptake of HIV prevention methods, including PrEP, among their peers. We learned how the CHOICE HIV Prevention Ambassador Training Package was adapted for use in Ghana then broke into discussion groups to discuss the training content and learn from one another about how this model could be applied in other country contexts.

  • Updated WHO Guidance on Laboratory Monitoring for PrEP and the GEMS Project’s HIV Drug Resistance Monitoring

    In this session, the WHO provided updates from the new Consolidated HIV Guidelines on laboratory monitoring and testing for oral PrEP, particularly relating to kidney function, and the GEMS project team discussed the risk of HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) in individuals who seroconvert while using PrEP. Presenters from the GEMS project explained how national-level HIVDR monitoring has been conducted in partnership with Ministries of Health. We reviewed examples of job aids and other resources we developed and described the process of training sites, collecting and testing samples, and data evaluation and dissemination.

  • PrEP-Related Stigma

    In this seassion, we focused on PrEP and stigma. We heard from former and current PrEP users about how they have experienced stigma related to PrEP use and broke into discussions on what stigma looks like in different countries and how best to address it.

  • Developing Guidelines and Plans for the Delivery of Event-Driven PrEP

    This session focused on event-driven oral PrEP. Gaston Djomand (CDC) and Chris Obermeyer (USAID) provided an overview of this PrEP regimen—what it is, who it’s for, effective use, advantages and disadvantages, and policy and programmatic considerations for implementation, and implementation resources. In addition, Greg Carl (Institute of HIV Research and Innovations) shared EpiC’s ED-PrEP rollout experience in Thailand.

  • West Africa Regional PrEP Learning Network: PrEP and Intimate Partner Violence

    Partners across countries shared approaches, resources and experiences with integrating screening and support for intimate partner violence (IPV) into PrEP services, with a particular focus on women using PrEP. Participants discussed the WHO LIVES training, the CHARISMA intervention and national tools and systems from Kenya, Eswatini and South Africa.

    In this webinar, we provided brief introductions to how PrEP-it, a tool that assists with PrEP planning, monitoring, and evaluation, can be used to set targets, cost programs, and forecast needs for antiretroviral drugs and other PrEP commodities. This webinar also explored tool capabilities and examples of where and how it has been applied to date. This webinar was cosponsored by the CHOICE collaboration and the USAID Health Policy Plus and EATAP-II projects.

  • Adapting WHO Guidance for national PrEP policy and programming: Guideline development

    In this 90-minute webinar, we dove into the WHO guidelines for oral PrEP and hear how countries have adapted them in national PrEP policy and guidelines. The discussion highlighted several topics to inform guideline and implementation plan development, including: laboratory testing requirements, risk assessment, PrEP initiation and follow-up visit schedules, multi-month dispensing, and populations for oral PrEP, including adolescents and pregnant and breastfeeding women.

  • West Africa Regional PrEP Learning Network: Kick-off Webinar!

    In this 90-minute webinar, we introduced participants to the CHOICE Collaboration, the West Africa Regional PrEP Learning Network and a product introduction framework that has been developed for oral PrEP rollout. We heard from LVCT Health and Pangaea Zimbabwe AIDS Trust as they shared oral PrEP rollout experiences in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Presenters discussed their experience with oral PrEP policy and guideline development, as well as early implementation planning.

The West Africa Regional PrEP Learning Network will be hosted by:

Collaboration for HIV Prevention Options to Control the Epidemic (CHOICE), a 24-month collaboration funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Office of HIV/AIDS’ five-year competitively awarded central mechanisms: Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) and Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE). The goal of this partnership is to address technical gaps and support national scale-up of antiretroviral-based HIV prevention products (collectively referred to as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP) in PEPFAR countries through catalytic evidence generation, translation and research utilization. CHOICE is led by FHI 360 and Jhpiego.
