Oral PrEP uses antiretroviral drugs in pill form to prevent HIV. Today, there are two forms of approved oral PrEP: a combination of tenofovir and emtricitabine or TDF/FTC (brand name Truvada) and a combination of tenofovir, alafenamide and emtricitabine or F/TAF (brand name Descovy). Both are prescribed as daily pills.
Click on their dedicated pages below for more information on each including clinical trial evidence, findings from national scale-up and associated advocacy.
Other forms of oral PrEP are in development and future products may be longer acting or incorporated in multi-purpose technologies that combine HIV prevention with contraception or prevention of other diseases or sexually transmitted infections.
