The Tablets, Ring, Injections as Options study, or TRIO, was conducted with young women aged 18 to 30 in Kisumu, Kenya and Soshanguve, South Africa between 2015 and 2017. The study examined young women’s perspectives on future MPT in a clinical study of three placebo MPT products. TRIO identified anticipated enablers and barriers to adoption and use of future MPT, explored preferred product characteristics, and solicited novel product design recommendations. The project’s key findings are that women overwhelmingly prefer a 2-in-1 product for pregnancy and HIV prevention, and want a product that will protect them in unanticipated situations. Barriers to product uptake and use identified include side effects, fear of using new biomedical technologies, misunderstandings about use and stigma, and trust within their relationships.
